Job Purpose
To supervise the work of the deck crew on board the vessel, ensuring the efficient and safe execution of daily maintenance and operational tasks, thereby supporting navigational safety and maintaining the vessel's condition.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Directly supervise the crew and assign daily tasks.
• Execute the First Officer's instructions regarding deck work and maintenance.
• Oversee routine deck maintenance, including painting, cleaning, and equipment repairs.
• Supervise mooring and unmooring operations.
• Ensure the readiness of safety and rescue equipment on deck.
• Operate and maintain deck equipment such as cranes, ropes, and moorings.
• Monitor adherence to safety procedures during work.
• Train new seamen on daily operations and safety procedures.
• Report any malfunctions or technical observations to the officer in charge.
Qualifications
• At least five years of practical experience in deck work on ships as an experienced seaman.
• Valid seaman certification (e.g., Able Seaman or equivalent). • Experience with certification in shift work, safety, firefighting, and first aid courses for working on ships.
• Good knowledge of deck equipment, mooring operations, and maintenance.
• Familiarity with maritime safety procedures.
• Note: Experience can be gained on any type of vessel to ensure comprehensive onboarding experience.
