About the Role

The Second Engineer plays a critical leadership role within the engine room, reporting directly to the Chief Engineer and taking responsibility for the daily operation and maintenance of onboard systems. The role focuses on ensuring continuous power supply and medical life-support systems while maintaining the highest safety standards for patients and crew.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily engine room operations and ensure efficient performance.
  • Monitor generators and power distribution systems to support sensitive medical equipment.
  • Maintain and oversee HVAC medical systems, including HEPA filters and pressure control for sterile environments.
  • Operate and monitor desalination systems (RO) and sewage systems to ensure continuous clean water supply.
  • Manage and update the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
  • Assign and supervise tasks for engineers and technical staff.
  • Lead technical emergency response and firefighting operations.
  • Ensure readiness of safety systems and compliance with emergency procedures.
  • Monitor and manage technical inventory (spare parts, lubricants, consumables).
  • Ensure compliance with maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL) and classification standards (Class).

Core Qualifications & Requirements

  • Certificate of Competency (COC) – Second Engineer (Unlimited).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in the same rank onboard Ro-Ro or Bulk vessels.
  • Strong knowledge of automated control systems and power systems.
  • Advanced understanding of HVAC and medical-support systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Leadership and team management capabilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure in sensitive operational environments.
  • Proficiency in technical English.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)

  • Previous experience on hospital ships or medical environments.
  • Familiarity with energy management or advanced automation systems.
  • Additional certifications in maritime safety or medical systems.
